<body background="images/water02.jpg" bgproperties="fixed"> <p align="center"><IMG src="images/Title.gif" width="603" height="33" align="top"></p> <center> <div align="center"> <center> <pre align="center"><b><font color="#FFFFFF" face="Tempus Sans ITC" size="3">319 Atlantic Avenue ¤ Westerly, RI 02891 ¤ Phone (888) 806-5202 ¤ Fax: (401) 322-0941</font></b></pre> </center> </div> </center> <p align="left"> </p> <p align="left"><font face="Arial Black" size="4" color="#FFFFFF">Welcome!  We are glad you came to see us here at the resort.</font></p> <p align="left"><font color="#FFFFFF" size="4" face="Arial Black">The Irish believe that there is treasure at the end of every rainbow... well you've found the Gem of the Ocean at the end of this one!</font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">Long before the era of Atlantic City and Las Vegas, a casino was just a place to gather together.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>Literally, it meant “little house.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>It eventually came to be used for a social gathering place, where one could dance, listen to music, and gamble.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>Well… now we know why we are called a casino, right?</font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">How about “Atlantic Beach?”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>Atlantic Beach was the name given to the northern end of Atlantic Avenue.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>The whole area of Misquamicut used to be called “Pleasant View.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>The name was eventually changed to the name we know today, which just happens to be an Indian word for “Pleasant View.”</font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">Now that we have a little background, we’ll just cover the basics of the history of this property.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>The Norwich-Westerly Railway Company originally created this parcel of land, during the turn of the twentieth century, as the Atlantic Beach Casino.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>In 1921, Harry and Julia Trefes purchased the property from the trolley company and continued to run the property under this name until 1972.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>In 1972, the property was sold to their sons Charles and Elias H. Trefes, who incorporated under the name of the Atlantic Beach Park, Inc.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">Why are we calling it a casino, again?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>In spite of the name change, the citizens of the Town of Westerly still refer to the business as the Atlantic Beach Casino.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>The developer, who grew up here, also continued to call it the Atlantic Beach Casino, and decided it was the most appropriate name, given its history</font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">About the Developer <o:p> </o:p> </font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">Barbara Stillman has worked her whole life.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>Many people say that, but as you will soon see, she really did. The following came from the New London Day, a local newspaper.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>“Barbara Stillman’s first big investment was a riding mower she bought from Grant’s with 2 years of layaway payments.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>She was 9 then, and figured she needed to upgrade the business she started at 7 if she was going to get anywhere”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>At that time she was mowing lawns for real estate agents.<o:p> </o:p> </font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">That was just the beginning.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>Since then, she has amassed several rental properties, and spearheaded the movement to make Misquamicut mean “family fun.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>She sits on the Board of Directors of the Westerly Chamber of Commerce, and has received several awards, including the Golden Key Award.<o:p> </o:p> </font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">“Single, sturdily built and looking for the next challenge, Stillman is in the midst of returning Misquamicut to the family atmosphere she remembers when she parked cars, sold T-shirts and helped run one of the oldest businesses at the beach, the Atlantic Beach Park.”<o:p> </o:p> </font></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><font size="4" face="Arial Black" color="#FFFFFF">“Her largest task is changing the beach’s image from the rowdy days when the drinking age was 18 and the “strip” created by Atlantic Avenue…was crowded with bars and kids….
